Leicester Town Hall |
I was passing by the Town Hall, when I spotted these reliefs on the front. They represent Night and Day, not an obvious subject for a municipal building but very pretty.
The Town Hall was officially opened in 1876 and was designed by Francis J. Hames. The sculptor of the reliefs is, alas, unknown.
Whilst on this theme I also came across this pair in Gallowtree Gate. This depiction of Night and Day is by the sculptor Joseph Crosland McClure who designed the South African War Memorial (see letter A). The building was originally built for the Stamford, Spalding and Boston Banking Co in 1907. It is now a branch of Dorothy Perkins.
It's amazing; I have lived in Leicester my whole life and never noticed these! I do try to look up every now and then when wandering around town, but normally I'm in a rush to get somewhere. Thanks for sharing these fantastic photos!
ReplyDeleteThe ones on the Town Hall are worth a moment and they’re not actually all that high up. They’re to the right of the main entrance.
DeleteHello, my friend.. Oh my goodness! What beautiful pictures of architecture! Thank you so very much! That has to be in another country than the U.S. They don't build things like that here, do they? Best regards to you. Ruby
ReplyDeleteThey don’t build them like that here any more. Thanks for your comment.
DeleteWonderful pics! I look forward to seeing more! Happy A to Z to U!
ReplyDeleteLove the night and day reliefs. Too bad the sculptor is unknown!

You have such an eye for detail, Sally! I used to work around the corner from Town Hall Square and look at that building everyday - but I obviously didn't look at it properly because I never noticed the specific detail. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteThose night and day images are beautiful. Such wonderful details you are spotting.
